Packing your bags can be quite tricky. Most of the time you take too much with you anyway, but still you sometimes forget things you would have liked to have had with you. Marcel always had packing lists and over the years we adapted them for our different holiday destinations. For our current trip, however, packing is a new challenge. After all, we do not know which countries we will actually be travelling to. So we have to be prepared for all kinds of weather. In addition, we would also like to go on some multi-day hikes during our trip. So sturdy shoes, trekking poles, sleeping bags etc. are a given. Of course we had already made our own packing list, but during packing we looked at Ania and Daniel‘s list every now and to check how many T-shirts, socks and underpants they took with them 😉 This helped Christiane to decide to reduce the number of her socks and underpants by half.
Baggage restrictions on flights and in our campervans
If you spend your holidays in a hotel or in an appartment, the suitcase size is rather uncritical. In a campervan, however, it is already difficult to accommodate Christiane’s big Samsonite suitcases. Therefore we decided to travel with big backpacks. Marcel has the slightly larger one with 75+10 liters; Christiane has the 55+10 liter backpack. Some of our friends suggested to send some stuff by mail in advance. That would be possible of course; however, we will not stay in Australia but fly with other airlines later on, so we will have the same baggage restrictions again. By the way, this do not only refer to the weight which is limited to 23 kg with most airlines. There are also external dimension restrictions of luggage that we have to comply with. For example, with China Airlines, the sum of each bag’s three dimensions must not exceed 158 cm, and on Virgin Australia the restriction on domestic flights is only 140 cm. We have made every effort to comply with these requirements… 🙂

Space saving Helpers
For our last trip to New Zealand we used vacuum bags, which are already very space-saving. However, they are quite stiff after you have let the air out and therefore too inflexible for the backpack. Also you can’t “just” get something out and pack it back in. Other travel bloggers recommended the IKEA pack bags and they are really practical. This way, not everything is just lying lying crosswise in the backpack and you can quickly fetch certain things.
